Simulations of fast transients

Modern vacuum circuit breakers (VCB) are capable of interrupting the load current within a very short time. While this is a desirable property, the interaction between the VCB, cables, and power transformers can give rise to high-frequency oscillations within in the distribution grid. This project investigated the nature of these oscillations by means of high-fidelity modeling and computer-aided simulations.

The developed models were calibrated against field measurements and then used for ascertaining the range of frequencies that were lightly-damped and could potentially cause damage to the equipment of the power grid. The models were also used for the evaluation of the effectiveness of the overvoltage protection equipment.
